Did you know that applying coffee topically can lead to tremendous healing and restorative benefits for your skin? While you may get your coffee fix in your daily cuppa joe, caffeine will soon become part of daily holistic skincare routine. French luxury cosmetic brand TERRE DE MARS, House of Natural Cosmetics, is all set to enter Indian markets with its unisex brand of skin care products, namely two coffee-based face and body scrubs, the 001 Résurgence and 002 Luminance.

Inspired by the virtues of coffee and plants, Terre De Mars creates innovative and natural body and face care products. All Terre De Mars products are Cosmebio certified (natural and organic cosmetic certification), cruelty-free, and vegan-certified by PeTA.

Terre De Mars has quarterly sales of 15,000 units in France. Their products are created, manufactured, and packaged entirely in France. The brand is in talks with an Indian distributor for the launch of their products in India, although in a niche market. India will be its second market. Aimed at the 25 to 45 age group, the scrubs come in a single dose container for maximum freshness. Each single-dose pack costs close to Rs 650.

Akin to a new-age apothecary combining the freshest of ingredients, Terre De Mars offers natural ingredients in highly concentrated formulas. The first products from Terre De Mars are the Resurgence and Luminance scrubs — the result of a two-year extensive research under the control of the French scientific and regulatory experts. The 001 Résurgence and 002 Luminance represent an innovative mix of coffee, turmeric, and bamboo.

The products are made from natural ingredients known for their varied benefits and biocompatibility with the skin. The scrubs are made from Arabica coffee powder along with castor oil, shea butter, argan oil, sweet almond oil, aloe vera, lemon, coconut and sugar cane.

Iran-born Poulad Djamali, one of the founders of the brand, was inspired by his grandmothers beauty secret — that of using fresh coffee grounds in a skin masque! Studies indicate that antioxidants in coffee fight free radicals that cause premature cutaneous aging. Coffee can soothe sunburned skin and reduce the appearance of sun spots, redness, and fine lines.

Coffee is anti-inflammatory, a natural exfoliator, reactivates blood circulation, and effectively reduces acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Coffee promotes the breakdown of fatty tissue accumulation thus reducing the appearance of orange peel and cellulite.

Since the brand is prepping for its India launch, the products are designed with Indian consumers in mind. The 001 contains revitalizing bamboo stems and the 002 contains turmeric root powder known for its purifying and anti-bacterial properties. The 002 Luminance is created with coffee, turmeric, argan oil, and castor oil.

The cosmetics industry in India is showing a significant growth and is right now a $2.5 billion business in the country. The market is expected to grow by 8.4 percent (CAGR 2018-2021), among the fastest globally.

While Terre De Mars is not looking at mass production or mass distribution, it does however seek to minimize its carbon footprint by sourcing ingredients of natural origin and using environmentally sound processes. Terre De Mars products are manufactured in small series. Their next product line will have a sheet mask infused with caffeine, a liquid soap, and a moisturizing cream.
